People who are enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) in Colorado will have a more limited set of infant formula options beginning March 1.
As part of an effort to provide more options for WIC families during the infant formula shortage this past year, the USDA allowed people receiving WIC benefits to purchase formulas outside of powdered Enfamil 12 oz containers that had been the standard before the shortage. The shortage had a disproportionate impact on families with low incomes across the country, especially those who receive baby formula and other food through Colorado WIC.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recognizes that this transition will take some time, and flexibilities to allow families to purchase larger sizes of the product than had previously been allowed will remain in place until April 30. Flexibility for specialty formulas will also remain in place until June 30.
Detailed guidance around this transition can be found on the USDA’s website. For answers to frequently asked questions, visit ColoradoWIC.gov.
