As Pride Month draws to a close, we continue to recognize and celebrate the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and individuals of numerous other sexualities and gender identities have had on history. We are especially grateful for the many organizations across Colorado that work toward ensuring LGBTQ+ youth have the support and resources they need to thrive.

While Colorado is known for having some of the most robust LGBTQ+ protections of any state in the West, we recognize that there is still a need for systemic change. Unfortunately, LGBTQ+ youth, and especially transgender youth, continue to face discrimination in schools across the country. The Colorado Children’s Campaign is proud to have recently signed on to an open letter supporting the full inclusion for transgender and LGBTQ+ youth in schools.

This letter calls out recently proposed legislation that works to deliberately exclude LGBTQ+ youth from school sanctioned activities, further reinforcing the already high rates of discrimination and bullying faced by these youth in school. We, along with the many other organizations that signed this letter, oppose these policies. It is essential that students of all gender identities and sexualities feel that they are safe and supported in their learning environments.

In a recent news article, Gov. Polis highlighted Colorado’s progress in recent years to advance the rights of LGBTQ+ people. He noted that, while he is proud of the strides made by the state, LGBTQ+ youth still have a high suicide rate and homelessness rate. In order to continue making progress, he stated that Colorado must continue to protect LGBTQ+ rights at the state level, as well as ensure LGBTQ+ history is not covered up in schools.

Even outside of June, we hope that you will continue to celebrate the lived experience, perspectives and contributions of LGBTQ+ Coloradans. You can visit this KidsFlash article from earlier this month to find a list of organizations across the state who build access, power and equity among LGBTQ+ young people in a variety of ways, including through the advancement of statewide initiatives that work toward more inclusive policies and practices.
