KidsFlash is kicking off Pride Month
June is pride month! Over the next few weeks in KidsFlash, we will highlight organizations that work to advocate for the rights of LGBTQ+ communities, share recent data on LGBTQ+ youth, and elevate the stories of LGBTQ+ individuals in Colorado.
LGBTQ+ Pride Month, celebrated in June every year, originally began to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York City. The purpose of this month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and individuals of numerous other sexualities and gender identities have had on history. In Colorado, there is no shortage of Pride events to attend, celebrate, and learn from. Denver PrideFest is a free, 2-day festival on June 25-26 that promotes the heritage and culture of the LGBTQ+ Colorado community. Typically drawing more than 500,000 attendees and hosted in the heart of downtown Denver, this is the largest Pride event in the Rocky Mountain Region.
In addition to these celebrations, we want to take time to acknowledge the numerous organizations across Colorado that work toward ensuring LGBTQ+ youth have the support and resources they need to thrive. You can find a few of these organizations listed below:
- The Center on Colfax in Denver has become the Rocky Mountain Region’s largest LGBTQ+ community center. They play a pivotal role in advancing statewide initiatives to decrease discrimination and harassment, and provide programs and resources to the LGBTQ community. Their youth program, Rainbow Alley (for ages 11-21), is a safe space for LGBTQ+ youth and allies to find acceptance and support.
- Inside Out Youth Services in Colorado Springs builds access, power, and equity among LGBTQ+ young people. Among its numerous programs, IOYS offers counseling, community outreach and education, and direct aid to LGBTQ+ youth in the El Paso County region.
- Queer Asterisk, with locations across the Denver Metro area and Fort Collins, is a queer and transgender led nonprofit that provides counseling, educational trainings, and therapy programs that center the trans and queer experience.
- Four Corners Rainbow Youth Center in Southwest Colorado aims to build an anti-racist, anti- oppressive, visible space for LGBTQ+ youth and their families. They believe in empowering through education and demystifying stereotypes. Their mission is that LGBTQ+ youth and allies will develop and lead supportive activities that benefit their overall well-being.
Stay tuned throughout the month of June as we continue to celebrate the lived experience, perspectives and contributions of LGBTQ+ Coloradans.
