Our 2021 Annual Fundraiser, presented by Goldbug, is fast approaching! On Oct. 8 from 4-6 p.m., join us for a conversation that will focus on the issues in our education system laid bare by the pandemic and how we as advocates and social architects can draft a new blueprint for our K-12 schools.
Keynote speaker Sharif El-Mekki, founder and CEO of the Center for Black Educator Development, brought to you by David and Laura Merage Foundation:
A nationally recognized principal and former U.S. Department of Education Principal Ambassador Fellow, Sharif El-Mekki’s work is devoted to developing ongoing learning opportunities for Black teachers and educators serving students of color. Before founding the Center, El-Mekki’s school, Mastery Charter Shoemaker, was awarded a number of accolades – including the prestigious EPIC award for 3 consecutive years of being amongst the top 3 schools in the nation for accelerating student achievement. In 2014, he founded The Fellowship: Black Male Educators for Social Justice, an organization committed to developing and retaining Black male teachers. El-Mekki is a member of the 8 Black Hands podcast, blogs on Phillys7thWard, and serves on numerous boards and committees focused on racial and educational justice. Special guest Gitanjali Rao, Time’s 2020 Kid of the Year:
Recognized as America’s Top Young Scientist, Gitanjali Rao is the inventor of Tethys—an early lead detection tool for which she received an EPA Presidential Award, Epione—a device for early diagnosis of prescription opioid addiction, and Kindly—an anti-cyberbullying service using AI and Natural Language processing. Rao was honored as one of Forbes’s “30 under 30 in Science” in 2019, and as one of America’s Top Youth Volunteers by Prudential in 2021 for the STEM workshops she conducts globally.
