Medicaid delivers essential health insurance coverage to 43 percent of Colorado’s children under 19 (about 573,000 children). Public insurance programs like Medicaid and the Child Health Plan Plus set our kids up to thrive in two ways—by helping them access the care they need to grow up healthy and strong, and by protecting the financial resources of their families. A 2017 study examining the impact of health benefits on poverty rates found that Medicaid decreased the child poverty rate more than all other non-health means-tested programs combined.
