Between 2017 and 2019, 49 percent of Colorado’s 3- and 4-year-olds (about 68,000 young children) were not enrolled in any type of school, including nursery school, preschool, kindergarten or Head Start programs. High-quality preschool programs help ensure our youngest learners start kindergarten with the skills they need to hit the ground running, and the positive effects of preschool don’t expire during childhood. Longitudinal research show that participation in a high-quality preschool program can alter the trajectory of a child’s life, with benefits experienced for decades to come.
