Colorado is one of eight states selected to receive a five-year federal grant to address learning recovery and related impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic and implement practices and systems to improve student development and family well-being in our communities. The grant, totaling over $4.7 million over five years, will task the National Center for Families Learning (NCFL) with creating and leading the Colorado Statewide Family Engagement Center (CO SFEC). The project will include partnership with the Colorado Education Initiative (CEI), the Colorado Department of Education (CDE), the Colorado Statewide Parent Coalition (CSPC), and the Black Parent Network (BPN).

Disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have intensified the need for robust and cohesive family engagement systems in Colorado schools. In recent Colorado data, school leaders and teachers report needing additional help in supporting their student’s social emotional well-being and in engaging families and community. Coordinated and aligned family engagement efforts are a critical need in order to support learning recovery and academic achievement, particularly for children of color.

The CO SFEC will support identified needs of K-3 reading loss, student mental health, disengagement of high school students, and adult education. The program will build a system that connects and integrates family engagement in education initiatives at state, regional, and local levels. This incredible opportunity to leverage federal and state investments will provide a national model for state response to pandemic learning recovery and effective community partnerships.

The Colorado Children’s Campaign was a proud supporter of this application earlier this year and we are excited to see the impact this investment will have on Colorado youth and families. Read the full release here: FINAL_CO_SFEC_news_release_9-13-22.pdf (familieslearning.org)
