Child advocates call on Secretary Nielsen to halt the separation of children from parents at the border

The Colorado Children’s Campaign joins more than 540 child advocacy organizations across the nation calling on the federal government to immediately stop separating children from their parents at the border. We are deeply concerned that the Department of Homeland Security is inflicting permanent harm on children by taking them from their parents with the stated intent to deter or punish parents and children who come to our border seeking protection. This practice will have significant and long-lasting consequences for the safety, health, development and well-being of children. Studies show that children who are detained experience trauma, stress, and anxiety, and that detainment may cause developmental delays and long-term mental health risks for children.

The Children’s Campaign joined other advocates across the nation, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico in signing a letter to DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen asking her agency to immediately stop separating children from their parents. Children are sometimes separated from their parents for months or longer than a year.

The organizations, which include experts in child welfare, child protection, and child health and development, highlighted the evidence that separating children from caregivers leads to serious, negative consequences to children’s health and development.  The letter also argued that “forced separation disrupts the parent-child relationship and puts children at increased risk for both physical and mental illness.”
