HB 22-1055 (Lontine & Herod/Jaquez Lewis & Winter) Sales Tax Exemption Essential Hygiene Products
Summary
This bill would create a state sales tax exemption for infant and adult diapers and period products.
Position
The Colorado Children’s Campaign supports this bill. In Colorado, necessities such as food are not taxed. Diapers and period products are necessities, yet, many consumers struggle to afford these products and also must currently pay sales tax when purchasing them. Along with that, the regressive nature of sales taxes means that households with lower incomes will spend a larger percentage of their income on these taxed items. State sales taxes on diapers and period products put these essentials further out of reach for many Coloradans.
Current Status
The bill passed out of the Senate Finance Committee and now heads to Appropriations.
