Parent Academy FAQs
Who should apply for the Children’s Campaign’s Parent Academy?
The course is designed for parents, grandparents, and caregivers of school-age children in Colorado. Applicants must be able to commit to at least 4 of the 5 sessions. Learn how to navigate the state Capitol and legislative process, interact with elected officials, tell your story and push for continued high-quality education opportunities in Colorado.
What if my child isn’t in school yet?
If your child will be entering school at any point, then you have a vested interest in learning advocacy strategies around K-12 education.
What if my child just graduated from high school?
Congratulations! Your experience and passion are important and we would love to have you participate in our Parent Academy. Sharing your experience will help improve education for kids currently in or soon entering the education system.
My kids go to private school. Can I still apply?
Yes! While the course will focus on policies and implementation happening in the Colorado public schools, your voice and experience are important.
I have no experience in advocacy. Can I still apply?
Being an “expert” is not a requirement. The best advocates aren’t paid lobbyists or public policy professionals. The most effective advocate is one who believes in what he or she is promoting and who is sincere and committed to the subject. Your expertise and interest in children’s issues makes you a trustworthy and effective spokesperson, because lawmakers value hearing directly from their constituents. We want to provide you a strong toolkit of strategies to ensure your voice is heard.
I have had some experience being an advocate. Should I still apply?
Yes. We hope to provide additional strategies and experience that will enhance your advocacy skills. Other participants will benefit from your expertise as you share your knowledge and skills with the group.
I think this training would benefit my professional work and organization. Do you have a letter that I can share with my boss to have this training approved?
Yes. We are happy to work with you and your employer to show the benefits of this training opportunity.
I don’t live in Denver. Can I still apply?
The Denver Metro Parent Academy will host all sessions in Downtown Denver – so logistically it may be difficult to attend once a month from locations further out-state. However we do have reimbursements available; please contact Stephanie Perez-Carrillo at firstname.lastname@example.org for further details. We also have Parent Academy opportunities in locations across the state this year. Applications will open for the Weld County Family Engagement Academy in December.
Can you help accommodate the need for child care during the day?
Yes. If you need to adjust your schedule for child care during the training sessions, please note that on your application and we will work together so that you can attend.
