ACTION ALERT: Don’t let tax bill take health insurance from 13 million Americans

Final votes on the federal tax bill are expected early next week. This week, Republicans announced they had reached a compromise between the Senate and House tax bills that went to conference committee. This means that both the House and Senate can move for a final vote on this bill, and we’re hearing the first vote could happen Monday. While we’ve written before that most Americans prioritize refinancing the CHIP program over the tax reform fight, it is clear that Congress will move the tax bill forward first. It will be an up or down vote and requires only a simple majority in both chambers to pass. The tax bill includes repeal of the individual mandate requirement of the Affordable Care Act that requires individuals to pay a tax penalty if they have an offer affordable health insurance but do not take it. This repeal will cause double-digit spikes in health care premiums every year, and result in 13 million fewer Americans having health insurance.
