Uninsured Rate for Colorado Kids Plummets

Colorado Health Access Survey Shows Just 2.5% of Kids Uninsured

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 1st, 2015

Statement from Chris Watney, President and CEO of the Colorado Children’s Campaign:

The release of the Colorado Health Access Survey today brought great news for Colorado’s kids and families. For nearly a decade, the Colorado Children’s Campaign, along with our partners in the All Kids Covered coalition, have been working at the policy and community levels to ensure that all kids have health coverage. The new data released today as part of the Colorado Health Access Survey show that the uninsured rate for children in Colorado is 2.5 percent, which is down from 7 percent in 2013. This news is both gratifying and inspiring. Real progress is possible when policymakers, community leaders and service providers work together to solve a problem.

Health coverage is the foundation for ensuring access to quality health care and putting kids on a path to lifelong success. Whether that coverage is provided through a public program or private plan, children with health insurance are more likely to access the preventive services they need to stay healthy and grow up strong. They can seek services like well-child checks and immunizations, and they can seek care in a timely way when they are sick or injured. In order for Colorado to succeed, we need all of Colorado’s kids—from all backgrounds and all parts of the state—to benefit from access to health care. This new data, which are consistent with national data sources such as the U.S. Census, show we are much closer to realizing that goal.

This progress in coverage is something to celebrate, but we must also continue the work of improving our health care system to ensure this coverage is providing access to high quality care. There are a number of encouraging initiatives underway, including the redesign of the Medicaid accountable care collaborative and the State Innovation Model (SIM) initiative. The Children’s Campaign will continue to work closely with state and community partners to ensure these initiatives keep kids in mind and that Colorado continues to be a national leader in building a stronger health care system for all residents.
