Community Leaders to Examine Issues Facing Kids in Summit County

May 15 discussion to explore child health and education issues.

PRESS ADVISORY

May 5th, 2014

Community leaders will examine health and education issues facing local children in a community discussion May 15 in Frisco in partnership with Early Childhood Options and the Summit County It’s About Kids Team. To start the conversation, the Colorado Children’s Campaign, Colorado’s leading voice for kids, will present statewide and county-specific data on child well-being from its 2014 KIDS COUNT in Colorado! report.

The annual KIDS COUNT report provides statewide and county-by-county data on a range of factors impacting child health, early childhood experiences, education and overall well-being. The goal of the KIDS COUNT report is to provide a clearer picture of how kids across Colorado—and locally—are faring and to provide local leaders and those interested in improving the lives of kids with the county-specific data and analysis they need to better serve children.

In this year’s report, Summit County ranked 13 out of the 25 most populous counties in Colorado for overall child well-being, up one spot in the rankings from 2013 but down overall from 2012. The Child Well-Being Index includes 12 key indicators in the areas of health, education and family and economic indicators. Summit County ranked better than most other counties across the state in the areas of child poverty, childhood overweight and obesity and the high school dropout rate. It ranked relatively poorly for the percent of babies born with a low birthweight and uninsured children.

The free event is co-sponsored by Early Childhood Options and the Summit County It’s About Kids Team.
