Community Leaders to Examine Issues Facing Kids in Chaffee County

June 5 discussion to explore child health and education issues.

May 27th, 2014

Chaffee County community leaders, including former Colorado First Lady Jeannie Ritter, will examine health and education issues facing children locally and throughout Colorado in a community luncheon June 5 in Salida. To start the conversation, the Colorado Children’s Campaign, Colorado’s leading voice for kids, will present state-wide and county-specific data on child well-being from its 2014 KIDS COUNT in Colorado! report.

The Colorado Children’s Campaign’s recent report shows that more Colorado children were living in poverty in 2012—when the economy was technically in recovery—than during the worst of the Great Recession. Since 2000, only two states have seen a larger percentage increase in the number of children living in poverty than Colorado. The annual KIDS COUNT in Colorado! report provides state- and county-level data on a variety of child well-being indicators.

Jeannie Ritter, Mental Health Ambassador for the Mental Health Center of Denver, will deliver a keynote address and join a panel of community leaders to discuss trends in child well-being in Chaffee County and throughout Colorado.

The free event is co-sponsored by the Colorado Children’s Campaign and the It’s About Kids Network. Lunch will be served.
